Take a Peak: Discover more of Zermatt in our latest print
issue, Volume
35: Celebration.
Sitting
pretty at the foot of
Switzerland’s most storied mountain, Zermatt is a
pristine-powder town. Nestled in the Valais canton, the serene
resort is hugged tight, affording 360-degree views of the
Matterhorn and 28 other snowy peaks. Throw in a bevy of bustling
bars and rustic restaurants, and you’ve got the ultimate
adventurer’s playground.
But, where to base yourself? There’s no better feeling than
dashing back to a warm, welcoming pad after a thrilling day on the
slopes. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that where you bed down
is often what makes a trip most memorable. With that in mind, we’ve
done the legwork to find the cosiest stays in town, from serious
splurges to wallet-friendly getaways, these are the loveliest
boltholes Zermatt has to offer.

If you haven’t spotted Riffelalp’s rooftop pool on your
Instagram feed at least once this year, we’re assuming you’re
living under a rock. While, admittedly, the resort isn’t exactly in
the centre of town (it’s a 20-minute train ride to reach it), once
there, you’ll have everything you’d ever need and more. We’re
talking three in-house restaurants, a wide range of mountain
pursuits (included in the room rate) and a wellness spa, for
starters. On night one, we’re dining at Restaurant
Alexandre – you’ll want to start by ordering the potato gnocchi
with marinated salmon trout and leek – before rising early the next
day for a sledging session in nearby Rotenboden.
