No
trip to Nice can be complete without a visit to one of its
cacophonous daily markets. Begin the day at Cours Saleya, where
you’ll find Niçoise specialities like plump, football-sized
courgettes and wood-fired socca (chickpea pancakes), brought
straight to the stalls by bicycle. After a meander, make your way
to Castle Hill for unbeatable views across the azure-blue bay, then
grab a culture fix at the city’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary
Art (MAMAC), where a wave-like rooftop offers yet more 360-degree
views across town.

It’s a decent climb, but at the top of the stairs you’ll be rewarded with unbeatable views over the immaculate blues of the bay. (At certain hours you can forgo some of the lookouts and take the elevator.) It’s worth noting that minimal ruins are all that’s left of the castle, however, the scenery makes the effort of getting to the summit worth it.

Cours Saleya Market

Matisse once rented an apartment on this historic street, where each day showcases the world in one place: Italian meats, Indian spices, Provençal lavender, Turkish tea and an abundance of colourful fruits, veg and flowers that could inspire any artist. If this sensory feast whets your appetite, the Chez Thérésa stand serves the Old Town’s only wood-fired socca (chickpea pancake), which comes straight to the stall by bicycle.
